At the time Gunungkidul was still a jungle, there was a village inhabited by some people escape from Majapahit. The village was Pongangan, led by R. Dewa Katong, Brawijaya’s King brother. But Regent Mas Tumenggung Pontjodirjo was not long-serving because of the determination of regional Gunungkidul boundaries between the Sultan and Mangkunegaran II on May 13, 1831. Gunungkidul (except Ngawen) to be the district under the Sultanate of Yogyakarta.
Mas Tumenggung Pontjodirjo was replaced by Tumenggung Prawirosetiko, He moved the district town from Ponjong to Wonosari.

While legally, the status as one of Gunungkidul County district that the district is entitled to regulate and manage their own in an environment of Yogyakarta Special Region and based in Wonosari as the district capital, decided on August 15, 1950 by Law No. 15 Year 1950 jo Government Regulation No. 32 years old in 1950 when led by KRT Labaningrat Gunungkidul.
