Robben Island is located in the Atlantic Ocean about 15 km from the city of Cape Town. This island was a single continent with Bloubergstrand area, which eventually separate by the natural phenomenon that occurs in millions of years ago. This island has a total area of 574 ha. There are many seals so that the Dutch people called it Robben Island, which means island of seals.
The island is a place of detention of South African fighters against apartheid regime governance. Former President Nelson Mandela was languishing in there from 1964 until 1974. Since the 1660s the Netherlands has used Robben Island to detain political fighters who come from Asia, especially Indonesia. People Cayen of Sumatra is the first Asian man who was arrested there in 1667.
Prince Cakradiningrat IV from Madura, Indonesia were also detained in this island for 12 years until his death. The first inhabitants of South Africa is Autshumato (Harry), Khoikhoi tribe chief who was arrested by Jan van Riebeeck in 1658, but a year later with his friends managed to escape and get away from the island. Robben Island attract many foreign and local tourists because of historical value is quite high.
Robben Island can only be reached by boat either ferry or other small vessels. Travel by boat to Robben Island takes approximately 30 minutes.
