Kecak Dance is a form of Balinese music drama. Kecak was created in the 1930s. performed by a circle of 100 or more performers wearing checked cloth around their waists, percussively chanting “cak” and throwing up their arms, depicts a battle from the Ramayana where the monkey-like Vanara helped Prince Rama fight the evil King Ravana. However, Kecak has roots in sanghyang, a trance-inducing exorcism dance.

Around the 1930s Wayan Limbak cooperate with German painter Walter Spies to create dances based on traditional Kecak Sanghyang and parts of the Ramayana story. Wayan Limbak popularizing this dance while traveling the world with his troupe of Balinese dancers. If you visit Bali you must see the Kecak Dance show. It is amazing.
